The Himalaya Eye Hospital has launched the Bachelor of Science in Optometry, a four-year program for vision expert production. According to the hospital, the necessary procedure for the first intake for this year has been completed with affiliation from Pokhara University. The total intake for this year is 15 with 1 seat as merit scholarship and 14 paying seats whereas the entrance exam is scheduled for November 6 at 7:30 am – 9:30 am. The application starts from October 9 2018.
The hospital has brought four-year programs to produce efficient manpower for eye disease treatment. Himalaya Eye Institute has been established under the hospital’s 7-membered management committee under the leadership of Prof. Dr Dil Bahadur Chhetri for conducting and administering the program. Prof.Chhetri is also the chairman of the Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh – Kaski.
The hospital released the information through the press meet on October 7. The academic criteria set for this program is 10+2 in Science Stream or equivalent course. According to Prof. Chhetri, 15 students will be admitted to the first year and the semester system will be engaged. The total cost for the study will be around Rs 8 lakh for four years. Dr Indra Man Maharjan, Chief Medical Director of the hospital, claimed that a four-year-graduate student would be able to conduct eye checkups and prescribe glasses, establish eye treatment centre and create self-employment opportunities. He further added that the four-year course would permit for Master’s Degree. “We have succeeded in bringing the program after two years of effort,” he said.
Secretary Surendra Thapa Magar said, “There is enough human resources and physical infrastructure to teach,” he said. The hospital has been operating in collaboration and support of Eye Care Foundation-the Netherlands.
