What is Optometry?
According to the World Council of Optometry “Optometry is a healthcare profession that is autonomous, educated, and regulated (licensed/registered), and optometrists are the primary healthcare practitioners of the eye and visual system who provide comprehensive eye and vision care, which includes refraction and dispensing, detection/diagnosis and management of disease in the eye, and the rehabilitation of conditions of the visual system.”
The profession of optometry has evolved since the late 19th Century as the primary eye care health profession responding to the universal need for quality, accessible, cost-effective eye and vision care. Optometrists are widely distributed in communities around the world; they provide economic value for the services they offer; they detect sight and life-threatening conditions such as glaucoma, diabetes and hypertension at savings to the health care system; they provide entry into the health care system for many patients who would otherwise not seek care they prepare our children for the competitive marketplace by assuring their visual health and preparedness for learning and achievement; they maximise employement productivity and benefit economic stability, and they promote quality of life and individual independence and reduce costly institutionalised and supported care.
