The government of India has decided to confer the fourth highest civilian award of India, Padma Shri award on Executive director of Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology and world-renowned eye surgeons Dr Sanduk Ruit. Dr Sanduk Ruit has the gifted vision to more than 100 thousand people through the low-cost cataract surgery techniques. He has awarded Padma Shri 2018 award.
Dr Ruit’s innovation in the 1980s led to a 90 per cent reduction in the cost of cataract eye surgery, Dr Ruit, and the team from Fred Hollows Intraocular lens laboratories of Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology exports low-cost intraocular lenses which is the artificial lens used to implant after removal of cataracts crystalline human lens to more than 30 countries. Dr Sanduk Ruit treats more than 2500 patients per week.
Padma Shri is the fourth highest civilian award in India, after the Bharat Ratna, the Padma Vibhushan and the Padma Bhushan.
