Introduction

Nepal Eye Hospital is the first Eye hospital in Nepal. It was established back in 1973 A.D in the city of Kathmandu. The hospital has been providing Comprehensive Eye Exam to People for a very long time. It is one of the best eye hospital located in Tripureshwor, Kathmandu, Nepal. It is located near the Dasharath Stadium.

NEH was Opened by Nepal Government to meet the needs of eye patients. Nepal Government used to run Nepal Eye Hospital at its early stages. It was running under the same building of Bir Hospital with few beds provided by the Government of Nepal as an Ophthalmology department.
Bir Hospital is the oldest and was established in 1889 in Kathmandu by the 11th Prime minister of Nepal, “Bir Shamsher Jang Bahadur Rana”. Today, the Bir hospital is Run by the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) since 2003.

Seeing the need to separate the eye care facility, Nepal eye hospital was later, legally established in Kathmandu city, working separately as an autonomous body. With the active initiation of Dr Ram Prasad Pokhrel, an icon Ophthalmologist of Nepal and other prominent personalities, Nepal Eye Hospital was later shifted to another place.

Dr Ram Prasad Pokhrel is a very distinguished personality in Nepal in the field of Eye Care  Services. He is known for his smart and active initiation to start and diversify eye care services in Nepal. He was also one of the founding members of Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh. For his work in ophthalmology and eye care services in Nepal, he is given the title of “Aakha Baa” which roughly translates to “Father of Eye”.

 

Since the establishment of this hospital in Kathmandu valley, the Ministry of health and population has been continuously providing financial support to the hospital Ophthalmologists and staff who were also shifted from Bir hospital to NEH. One eye department running in Bir hospital was later set to run on its own with a different name of “Nepal Eye Hospital”. Nepal eye hospital was established way before the IAPB was established. Thus, Nepal already started its tasks for the prevention and cure of blindness.

Nepal eye hospital has been a part of  5 decades starting from 1973 to till date. As a pioneer institution in the field of eye care service in the country, Nepal Eye Hospital is being involved in the area of scientific research utilizing its own resources to its maximum extent. Nepal Eye Hospital also provides services to the retina, Glaucoma, Cornea, and Oculoplasty. Other Services Includes Low Vision check/aid services and Orthoptics services. The hospital has good relation with Lions Aravind International Center for  Ophthalmology (LAICO), Aravind Hospital, and has currently been using the Integrated Hospital Management System (IHMS) developed by the center.

Hospital has more than 80 staff and provides sub-special clinic Facilities for diseases like Glaucoma, Retina, Oculoplastic, Paediatrics, and Neuro-Ophthalmic diseases, etc. This hospital also organizes many free Surgical Camps and Refraction camps in Villages and Schools. Japan was the first-ever Country that helped this hospital flourish.

They are planning to extend their services by adding Khokana Vision Center, Sankhu Vision Center in the near future.

Nepal Eye Hospital, Simara, Bara, Nepal

It is a secondary eye hospital planned by Nepal eye Hospital. The hospital has also initiated the process for establishing a secondary level eye hospital at Simara, Bara. In the initial phase, 5 kattha land has been acquired for hospital infrastructure and the process is underway to begin the construction work soon.

Outreach Activities

They regularly conduct one-day cataract screening camps, free cataract surgical eye camps, and school screening programs in various areas of Nepal.

Hospital Opening Hours

  • General OPD: Registration time from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM
  • Paying Clinic: Registration time from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM
  • Emergency Services: 24 Hours, 7 days

Registration Fee

The registration fee of General OPD for New patients is NRs. 80, and for Old patient is NRs. 60, Paying clinic registration fee is NRs 350.
