30 benefited from cornea transplant in Chitwan

A total of 30 people have been benefited from cornea transplant at Bharatpur Eye Hospital in Chitwan this fiscal year.

According to Chairman of Board of Members at the Bharatpur Eye Hospital, Chij Kumar Maskey, those whose vision was restored with corneal transplantation were aged between15-75 years.

Corneal transplantation service was launched in the Hospital since it began to procure corneas from the Kathmandu-based Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology last year.

The Hospital itself had collected and sent six corneas to the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology which sent back them to the Hospital for Rs 6,000 per cornea after processing them, shared Chairman Maskey.
The Hospital has been carrying out corneal transplantation at the cost ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 11,000, depending upon the condition of patients’ eyes.

The Hospital had sent Dr Pushpa Giri Shrestha to Tamilnadu in India for the studies of corneal transplantation. According to the World Health Organization, the blindness of the cornea is the fourth leading cause of blindness globally (5.1 percent) and is one of the major causes of visual deficiency after cataract, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration.

Four people with corneal blindness are in the waiting list for corneal transplantation in the Hospital.

The Bharatpur Eye Hospital has been operated by the Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh (NNJS), a non-governmental organization with 14 eyes eye hospitals and 56 eye care centres across the country. The NNJS, Chitwan branch has been launching awareness drive on eye donation in the district, said NNJS Acting Chairperson Krishna Raj Dharel.
